FREE
Admission to the San Diego Zoo
Article written by C. Combs
In honor of the Zoo's founding in October, children ages 3 to
11 are admitted to the Zoo FREE for the whole month of October.
But it doesn't stop there, on Monday, October 3, Founder's Day,
all guests visiting the San Diego Zoo will receive FREE General
Admission.
Right now is a great time to visit the Zoo. Not only will it
be less crowded now that kids are back in school and tourist
season has slowed but there's a celebration going on. If you
haven't already heard, the San Diego Zoo has a few "new
comers"... a 7-week-old baby panda and two 3-month-old
tiger cubs.
On August 2nd, 13-year-old Bai Yun gave birth to a single female
cub. Following ancient Chinese tradition, naming the cub will
not occur 'til she is 100 days old. The San Diego Zoo has the
largest population of the critically endangered giant pandas
outside of mainland China. The Zoo has four pandas, including
the newborn female cub, the adult female Bai Yun, the adult
male Gao Gao and Mei Sheng, the 2-year-old male juvenile panda.
It is estimated there are only about 1,600 giant pandas in the
world.
Another
exciting addition to the Zoo is the birth of two male tiger
cubs. On Thursday, September 22, the two cubs explored the tiger
habitat for the first time. The 3-month-old Indochinese tiger
cub and his brother spent the morning running, tumbling, and
taking turns stalking their mother and each other as they made
their public debut at the San Diego Zoo’s Tiger River
habitat. The unnamed cubs were born to a first-time mother,
"Mek," on June 4th and remained in a den until Thursday.
The trio will be on exhibit from 9 a.m. to noon daily. The San
Diego Zoo is now home to six Indochinese tigers, four adults
and the two cubs. There is an estimated 1,000 Indochinese tigers
left in the wild while about 45 live in United States zoological
facilities.
If you can't make the visit to the Zoo on Founder's Day, you
can still save on tickets. San Diego Super Guide offers discount
tickets to all attractions, including the San
Diego Zoo, the Wild
Animal Park and Sea
World.
