San
Diego's Favorite Beaches
San Diego has some of the most beautiful beaches in America...
in fact Coronado Beach was voted best beach in America this
year. There are many beaches located in our fine city, and all
of them offer something different. Take a stroll on the boardwalk
in Mission Beach, or catch some waves in Pacific Beach. Maybe
you have a dog and you want to let them run free at Dog Beach.
Whatever you're into, there's a beach for you!
Coronado Beach
Coronado was voted best beach in America! It is located along
Ocean Boulevard, between the World Famous Hotel Del and the
North Island Naval Air Station, the beach is flat, wide and
spacious, stretching for about 1.5 miles along the shoreline.
Coronado is a great place for families, tourists, and locals
alike. The beach is wide enough for all types of games, including
football games, paddleball, volleyball (bring your own net)
and the kids love it for the excellent sand castle building.
Swimming and Boogie boards are popular on the central beach
area but the surfers stay closer to the north end, especially
in the morning. The Coronado beach area is also nearby Sunset
Park, which is a great place for picnics, games, frisbee, or
whatever. There are only a few rules but please abide by them;
no alcohol or glass containers and keep fires in designated
fire rings only.
La Jolla Shores
La Jolla Shores is a huge, gorgeous beach, which makes it ideal
for sun-bathing, jogging, swimming and surfing. Kellogg Park
is nearby with its nice, grassy area and is perfect for a Sunny
San Diego picnic. There are only a few rules but please abide
by them; no alcohol or glass containers and receptacles for
beach fires usually are provided during summer months and are
available on a first-come, first-served basis. Dogs are allowed
on leashes from 6pm to 9am :)
Pacific Beach
Pacific Beach is a popular coastal hot spot among the 20 to
30-something crowd. It is a place to watch and be watched, to
surf, rollerblade, jog, bicycle, sun-bathe, or just hang-out.
This is the place for people-watching and eye-candy FUN! PB
is usually full of young locals and surfers, until summer when
many of the tourists or those who live East of the 805 start
to take over.
One of the most exciting parts of this community is the Boardwalk,
which you can cruise to check out what's going on. Pacific Beach
is a great beach for barbeques, volleyball, surfing and sunset
watching. Take a stroll down the boardwalk and stop for a cocktail
or refreshment at any of the patio bars along the way. There
are rules here too! Alcohol is prohibited from 8pm til noon
and no glass anytime. Take you dog for a walk from 6pm to 9am
:)
Pacific Beach has some great Surf Spots... it's the home of
the Tourmaline Surfing Park, aka. Baja La Jolla. This designated
surfing park is located between north Pacific Beach and Bird
Rock. Swimming is not permitted and surfers love the year-round
reef break.
Location: Tourmaline Street Pacific Beach, CA 92109

Ocean Beach
Ocean Beach is a totally layed back beach where you'll see people
surfing, swimming, playing volleyball and even fishing off the
Ocean Beach Pier. OB is home of Dog Beach (or what we like to
call "Doo Doo Beach")... dogs are allowed to run free,
play in the water, or whatever. You might even catch a dog on
a surf board, no joke!
Great low-key beach where you can just sit back and watch the
dogs go nuts, watch the surfers near the jetty or pier, or just
kick back with a beer and watch the sunset. Consumption of alcohol
is permitted on the beach from noon to 8 pm.
There's plenty to do off the beach, next to the pier on Newport
Avenue, where you'll find many eateries, bars, head-shops for
all the hippies, and tons of antique shops. Newport Avenue is
a great place to take a stroll on a Sunday afternoon when all
the Harley's and other bikes are parked up and down the street...
OB is known for its biker hangouts but don't be scared, it's
a cool, safe place that tries to keep commercial empires from
taking over its historic charm... KEEP STARBUCKS OUT!
Mission Beach
South of Pacific Beach, all the way to the end of Mission Boulevard,
lies Mission Beach. Almost like a generic Venice Beach, Mission
Beach has hosted MTV, X-Games and many other wild and crazy
events. Mission Beach is the home to Belmont Park, where you'll
find the famous Giant Dipper Roller Coaster, the Plunge, and
other amusement park fun for people of all ages.
Rent a bike or a pair of rollerblades, and take a stroll on
the boulevard. Mission Beach is an excellent place for a picnic,
barbeque, bonfires, and other fun group outings. You'll find
a mix of people... everything from families, locals, tourists,
surfers, or whatever. Follow the rules and have fun. Alcohol
is prohibited from 8pm to noon. Dogs are allowed from 6pm to
9am, and be sure to keep your fires in the containers meant
for beach fires.
