Kobey’s Swap Meet in San Diego

Kobey's Swap Meet
San Diego Swap Meet Flea Market
One Mans Trash is another Mans Treasure
Article written by Kristel Boe

Starting humbling back in the 70’s, the Kobey’s Swap Meet has undergone many changes and has grown to become the leading Swap Meet in San Diego. Located in the vast parking lot of The San Diego Sports Arena, Kobey’s features over a thousand vendors with unique, sought after, and inexpensive merchandise. Featuring both used and new items, Kobey’s truly exemplifies the belief that one mans trash is another mans treasure.

Drawing nearly 40,000 shoppers a week, if you didn’t think bargain shopping was a sport, Kobey’s will change your mind. The maze of vendors is daunting, it takes real stamina to visit them all, and competition is sometimes fierce when a one of a kind item is on display. It requires a definite plan and a little bit of haggling skill to score what you are looking for at the swap meet. When all is said and done, victory is sweet.

Kobey’s (being a fourth generation family owned business) credits families to much of its success because it has maintained a clean reputation through the years. Kobey’s does prohibit selling merchandise and certain items that do not conform with government guidelines, but other than that, if you can’t find it at Kobey’s then chances are, you aren’t going to find it!

When shopping at Kobey’s there are a few things you want to keep in mind to make your visit a breeze. For starters, even before you leave the house, wear the proper attire. Be conscious of the weather, wear sunscreen and most importantly comfortable shoes. While you’re at the house, be sure to bring cash. Select vendors will have credit card machines at their booths, but it is better to be safe than sorry. On your way to Kobey's arrive early. It is the best way to avoid crowds and you’ll get a better parking spot. The lots do fill up quickly, and merchandise goes quickly, so you better believe the early bird gets the worm in this case. A map is posted in the entrance of the Swap Meet; you’ll probably want to check that out before entering just to get a better idea of what is where. Lastly, let your garage sale skills lose! Be sure to rummage and look for hidden treasure, some vendors are also known to go down on price a little so a little haggling never hurts.

Kobey’s Swap Meet is the largest outdoor market in San Diego and the third largest on the west coast. It is a shopper’s delight and a bargainers dream.
