palm tree lined corridor, the sun setting over the pacific and
salty ocean air is the backdrop for the Ocean Beach Farmer’s
Market. Every Wednesday throughout the year, except for Christmas
and New Year’s weeks, you can throw on your flip-flops
and stroll up Newport Street. From 4-7 in winter and 4-8 in
summer, the block between Bacon and Cable, is closed to traffic
and open for llama rides and pedestrians. Vendor stalls, overflowing
with fresh fruit and vegetables, line both sides of the street.
The Ocean Beach farmers market is a certified market; this means
farmers are selling their own products directly to the public.
You can sample and buy a wide variety of freshly picked fruits
and vegetables at prices cheaper then you will find in your
local grocery store.
Intermixed with farmers are private vendors selling everything
from fresh flowers and fish, to home made jewelry and jam.
Local artists and craftsmen come out to sell their talents,
and local restaurants show up with food items from their menus.
There is often live music and there are always free samples.
Local businesses stay open late and if you are more the drinking
type, you can always drop into one of the beach bars for a
happy hour break.
Regular market visitors can rely on many vendors to be in
attendance every week, while other stalls might only pop up
once in a while. Whatever the combination of sellers may be,
vibrant and friendly personalities are guaranteed. Amanda
and Richard, a.k.a. The VW Vagabonds, were at the market last
week selling their newly published book, Wide Eyed Wanderers:
a book about their trip around the globe in a VW van. Although
they were only able to secure one slot at the market, you
